Six months on the reborn Five Bells - the name apparently of the boozer there until 1888, and long before it became a restaurant and then a pub again - seems to have established itself as a civilised watering hole a cut above the drink-tanks that tend to proliferate around here. It's a narrow-fronted but fairly deep building with pleasant wood panelling with good use of stepped-up and down areas to give an easy, comfortable air. The overall gloss effect of the refurbishment seems to have mellowed now to let the original character of the building blend nicely with the sprucing-up. We can't remember whether the smattering of prints and photographs of old Streatham had always been there. Pride and Young's Ordinary belie the ownership and a barrel or two of unusual guest bitters are a nice touch. (New photo to come).
