Boarded up for a while, this one reopened in 2006 and as is often the case with Sam Smiths pub refurbishments, it appeared virtually the same as it was before it closed. Anyway, the pub's proximity to West End attractions, easy-to-find location and the fact it has a large open seating area behind it under the trees (an area it shares with the neighbouring cafes and provides the West End with a reasonable approximation of a continental style al fresco experience), make this a popular place for meeting up in before a night up west. The usual Sam Smith's limitations may surprise first-time visitors, though Yorkshire émigrés will feel at home with the familiar Sam's beers, lagers and spirits. Our previous visit was a disappointment, with abrasive bar staff and annoyingly premature cleaning as closing time approached - happily, none of that was a problem on our latest visit.
