Located in the myriad courtyards and alleyways off Cornhill, this venerable City watering hole came under the ownership a few years back of the people who brought you Tup pubs. But fear not, over 300 years of atmosphere weren't traded in for stripped pine and Jamiroquai CDs. Always a popular pub, this one is often full to bursting, particularly as now the downstairs is a separate lunchtime dining space, cramming all the evening drinkers into the bar upstairs. That bar still retains an old-fashioned feel, with nooks and crannies aiming to satisfy the most furtive of drinkers (though they have to turn up early to guarantee a seat). It's a popular pub then and one that can fill up quickly, usually for the duration. Quaint touches include a self-service, coin-operated humidor, but this setting surely deserves a real butler for this. A five pint setting then, but still only a three pint pub.
