how to find it:

Go south over Blackfriars Bridge on the down river (left) side. Once over the river, go down the first steps you come to, down to the Thames walkway and walk under the railway arches (to the right). It's just beyond there. From Southwark turn left and head up Blackfriars Road go up the approach and almost on to the bridge. Then go down the steps as before.

picture of Founders ArmsA modern Young's pub on the south side of the river very close to Blackfriars bridge, it offers the usual Young's range of drinks and pretty decent food. Its location is what makes this place popular (and in summer it is very popular). It has a large terrace with seats and tables by the river, there are no major roads nearby (the heavy traffic on Blackfriars bridge is shielded by the closer railway bridge) and there's a nice view of the dome of St. Paul's rising above the squalid mass of buildings on the north bank, that is the Mermaid Theatre complex. The opening of Tate Modern has increased the clientele substantially, especially with the Millennium Bridge connecting across to the City, so sometimes service can be a little slow. The addition of a proper coffee bar in the corner suggests they know who their main clientele is and where they're coming from. It's still less crowded, has much better beer and is better value for money than the Tate café...
