A grand pub with great views over the Thames, this pub's gone upmarket a bit like a number of other Young's pubs. There's a separate dining room that capitalises on the view - can't say we blame this choice, as it's a pretty good view - a comfortable pub area and a downstairs bar that can be hired. The beer's what we expected, Young's and Wells, but decent enough (the Winter Warmer's on now and it's very nice). And judging by the clientele when we were in last, the move up has been welcomed by the locals and regulars. We even saw one couple nip into the restaurant area once lunch service was over, so it's obviously a bit relaxed about things. There's nothing wrong with it and the location is pretty prime, it's just not our first choice amongst the pubs in the area. And it gets busy on warm days, not to mention the day of the Oxford/Cambridge race.

I went to Duke's Head last night and here is what I have to say about it. The location is just perfect. Right on the river and lit up like Christmas it is really romantic in the evening. The interior is well decorated. The wood gives it the ye olde look but it is done in such a way as to feel modern and up to date. For a Wednesday night it was packed out with a really buzzy atmosphere. We were served immediately at the bar but the concept of starting a tab seemed a little beyond the bar staff. They took ages sorting the tab out before getting us our drinks which was a little irritating. As there were no free tables we squeezed in with another couple to have our drinks. I had to track down a waitress to ask for a table and we were told 15 mins for a table. It was closer to half an hour in the end but that was ok as we were not in a rush. Our waitress Amy was brilliant. Really smiley and chatty and very helpful. She recommended the salmon fillet with creamy dill sauce from the specials board and the Young's Beer Battered fish and chips. Both were bloomin' marvellous! We had the bread and olive board to share to start with which was a little massive. It would have been better if they did one for 2 as opposed to the huge generic size. We couldn't fit in a pudding as we were so full! Service: 7/10 Atmosphere: 8.5/10 Value for money: 9/10 Overall: 8.2/10
