how to find it:
From Farringdon: Turn right out of station and go down to Farringdon Road and then right again. Carry on down across Clerkenwell Road and Ray Street is the next left. The pub is just down on the right. From Chancery Lane: Take the Leather Lane exit from the station and go straight until you reach Hatton Garden. Turn left and carry on until you reach Clerkenwell Road. Cross over and go down Back Hill. The pub is ahead on the left.

Such an unreformed boozer as the old Coach & Horses was probably on borrowed time. What with The Eagle up the road and Exmouth Market nearby, the chances of this one turning gastro were always high. While it's managed to hold onto some beer credibility, the fact that most of the tables in the large room had reserved signs on them (on a Friday night!) meant that if you're just popping in for a drink you have to crowd into the cramped bar area. The beer was good, with guest beers given prominence and everything was well kept. And, if you're prepared to, you can squat on a table until the diners turn up. What we saw of the food looked good. While a good example of pub gone gastro, it's a far cry from the boozer we fondly remember ...
