picture of Queens Head
Ever been in a Young's pub and wondered where that photo of the Queen Mum pulling a pint comes from? Well, it was here at the Queen's Head, that Her Maj looked the East End in the face (well, midriff) from behind the bar and worked a pump. However, the pub's changed a bit since then. Externally it's still a traditional Victorian pub (in a rather nice Victorian Square), but internally it's had a bit of a makeover - and not for the better in our opinion. The walls are now predominately red, with a cream ceiling, the old bar is still there, but there's now an abundance of 21st Century technology, flat screen TV and projector for the sport, MP3 jukebox, super-cold beer pumps etc. It continues to serve Young's beer on the hand pumps, but the locals nowadays seems to prefer something of a much lower temperature. It's still a friendly enough place and everyone seems to know everyone else, but for the casual visitor the update has removed some of the charm from the place.
