picture of Yorkshire GreyA mini-history of recent pub trends, this one was a microbrewery up until a few years ago then slipped into generic pub-ness before being reborn as a "pub & kitchen". Given the area, the change hardly comes as a surprise. Since the foodie Gunmakers opened down the road, it's becoming something of a surprise when a pub in the area doesn't have Chilled Gazpacho on its menu (the exception being the nearby Griffin, where 'Dish of the Day' takes on an entirely different meaning). The Yorkshire Grey abides by the standard gastro refit - the bare boards, the lounge CDs - but does at least manage to get in a (well-kept) guest ale (Yorkshire Terrier on our visit) to keep the regular beers company. Given the imposing exterior, it comes as a surprise that the pub interior is quite a small and narrow affair - perhaps there's a bit more space in the intriguing sounding "Blue Room" function area. It's still early days for this one but we'll try and keep an eye on it. For the moment, it's not a bad effort (and a marked improvement on its recent past) but one that doesn't quite have enough of a personality to it yet.
