Is anyone really mourning the demise of Firkin pubs? A visit to one of the remaining pubs, the Fox and Firkin on Lewisham High Street, should dissuade anyone from donning their rose-tinted spectacles. Basically: big, roomy pub, small and standard selection of bitters and ales - Pedigree, IPA and Bass (most of which were off on our visit, and the one which was not off, was not particularly well-kept), OK beer garden (replete with a range of midges and flies), pool table, and a small stage for bands. It's hard to tell if people actually go to the Fox to see the bands, or if the gathered locals merely tolerate them - a lot of the time the band members outnumbered their audience. On our visit the overall classiness of the pub was enhanced by buckets laid out to catch the flow of water pouring from the ceiling. Hopeless then, but not without a certain charm, at least for those who nurse a nostalgia for old-school student unions.
