picture of Angel In Fields
Marylebone High Street is one of London's lesser-known upmarket shopping streets, with all sorts of expensive and fashionable boutiques and emporia lining both sides of the road. Guarding the southern entrance to this retail nirvana, stands a trusty Yorkshire stalwart - Sam Smith's Angel in the Fields. If you're a fan of the brewery, then you'll know what to expect, solid, well-kept traditional bitters, ales and stouts supported by an esoteric assortment of own-brand wine, spirits and mixers all at a very reasonable price. We know the Sam Smith's offer is not everyone's cup-of-tea (if you pardon the expression) but it does the job for us. The pub's been recently refurbished - the downstairs bar has been moved - but if you weren't familiar with it before, you probably won't realise - and the lower ground floor better laid-out as a result. It still has the same reassuring dark oak panelling and cosy interior. The service is fast and friendly and the upstairs room can be a welcome relief if it's crowded downstairs - usually lunch times and just after work. Its cheapness has also been discovered by the local student population - there must be a college nearby - so be warned that the occasional visit can resemble a Student Union bar.
