Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village. It should take about 15 mins to get from one to the other. Leave Highgate tube by the 'car park' exit so you're on the Archway Road. Cross the road and walk up Jacksons Lane till it meets Southwood Lane. Keep on Southwood Lane until you reach Highgate High Street. The pub should be on your left. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill, its on the right

As their web site correctly states, The Rose and Crown is a Grade II listed building and one of the oldest pubs in North London. So how was this important legacy handled? Naturally by being stripped of all character and atmosphere, with an overtly plain and contemporary look. To be honest, it sits at the very edges of the definition of a pub. Drinking is pushed to the front, and feels like the waiting room it is. Nothing to note on tap, but you will find a decent wine list. Eating is the mainstay here and prices are definitely aimed at the wealthy N6 residents. Play the game of spotting the flashes of almost caricatured pretension on the menu: give yourself 20 points for "jus", 30 for "reduction" - first one to 100 wins. Even the large garden (soon to reopen) will be offering a 'garden menu', for those who think they can sneak a relaxing pint there. This may be a lovely restaurant, pub as a pub it fails almost immediately.
