There are a myriad of pubs and bars within touching distance of Liverpool Street, though as so often in the vicinity of a mainline station, relatively few to recommend. The Lord Aberconway, a tribute to the last chairman of the Metropolitan Railway, bucks this trend, with plenty of character evident when you adjust your eyes to the dark interior. For a private chat there are a couple of tiny covered booths on the ground floor, while to escape the hordes around the bar you can climb to the mezzanine level. Service was friendly and efficient, there were four real ales on tap, and the menu is also quite extensive - especially the range of sausages. When leaves on the line stop you from getting home it is certainly a good spot to sink a few pints.
