We can remember when this was part of the old Firkin chain ('old' is a relative term, of course - about a decade ago they went out of business and sold all their pubs). It's retained a lot of the Victorian interior, with some modernisation in terms of furniture, but has kept a lot of the glass and tile work from its heyday. Despite attempts to make it more upmarket and gastro, it's still a solid, traditional local pub. It's a big place, with a reasonable selection of beers from the continent and real ales on the hand pumps. The pub grub is decently priced for this part of town and the overall impression is of a fine pub, whether for passing punters just after one or locals settling in for a longer session.
