picture of Ye Olde Rose and Crown
Ye Olde Rose and Crown has gone through a few incarnations over the last ten years or so. The latest incarnation has dispensed with the suits of armour and shields replacing it with...well, very little actually. Indeed, it's a pretty sparse place now, complete with harsh lighting. Their commitment to hosting events is certainly commendable though. Upstairs you'll find the Theatre Bar, where you might chance upon various live music or comedy nights. Meanwhile downstairs there is usually a very good selection of real ale, often from local sources, alongside even more live music and other events. The service is good and the locals harmless enough, but the house wine needs to be improved as you wouldn't even put it on your chips. Unfortunately we've not been lucky enough to visit during any of the events and consequently found the atmosphere somewhat moribund; you'd hope that Saturday night would be a lively time here, but it really wasn't. Still, we liked it enough here to return if we're ever in the area. Despite all the changes over the years, its good to see some constants remain, here in the guise of an elderly Asian gentleman who can usually be seen nursing a pint in the corner. He's been doing this as long as we've been coming here - some 15 years now.

What's with the bizarre policy of "open at 11, but no drinking allowed until noon??" Bartender tells me she's promised local mums no drinking before 12, so's not to disturb the kiddies. No, really.

New management doing a great job here. Good crowd coming in, fun events. This Sunday was jam-packed. Requires a re-review!
