After being a candidate for a Mitchell's & Butlers redo some while ago, not many people remember the fag-tastic shabbiness of old and fewer miss it. Looking similar (but never identical) to every other M&B refit, a mixture of styles adorn the interior: lots of brown paint, 1940s utility sideboards and kitschy lampshades, all studiously mismatched. Having eschewed large screen sport for louche lounging may have displeased the old Ranelagh's regulars, but the place is now nicely filled with a mixture of trendy 20 somethings and 'normal' young people who live nearby due to the 'reasonable' rental prices. On a few occasions now we've enjoyed good beer and good food on a relaxed weekend afternoon, but our most recent visit has forced us to knock a pint off the rating. The smug, sarcastic barman was tolerable and the fact that every ale was 'off' simply annoying, but the appalling food a (burger cooked to within an inch of its life and a salad garnish turning black and mushy) was thoroughly unacceptable. Hopefully a one-off, we'll chance another visit soon.
