Until recently bizarrely called 'Old George - Don't You Mean Kempy's?' this is one of the many unreconstructed traditional style boozers on Bethnal Green Road. As far as it goes, however, this is probably one of the less intimidating and more mixed of those on offer. It's a big, high ceilinged but slightly gloomy place, decked out with green velour bench seating and what looked like brick-effect wall panelling. There's a pool table at the back and a stage at the front, which was in the process of having disco lights and a mic set-up on it - we thought perhaps some karaoke was on the cards. The drinks won't set your pulse racing but the service is friendly enough and the crowd seemed fine - a real mix of old fellas, geezers, a smattering of newer Bethnal Green residents and a pub cat. Overall, despite being perfectly acceptable for a couple of drinks, its not somewhere we could envisage spending a whole evening.
