picture of Farwig
In the North end of Bromley on the way to Sundridge Park, the Farwig is one of those pubs of which we Bromleians have been conscious since our formative days, but which we have only recently taken to visiting from a critical perspective. Venturing in one quiet Friday afternoon, we were somewhat surprised to see a lack not only of punters but, apparently, bar staff. When the barmaid did eventually appear, we were advised that the Farwig was a member's establishment. No problem there, just sign the book. What did take us aback was the response to our query as to how long this has been so: "for years". If this is the case, we genuinely had no idea, but one way or another the welcome was somewhat less than effusive - which never fails to surprise us in the current economic climate. Anyhow, moving on to the pub itself, it retains the air of a social club (albeit of the smart variety) which it had on our last visit, unpretentious and quite comfortable, with a dartboard. The beer is still forgettable: if popular lager is your bag, it's fine, but there is no decent draught bitter. They do still have wine on tap, however, which is fairly rare in these parts. Perhaps the Farwig's saving grace is a lovely garden which actually resembles a domestic back garden, beautiful in Summer although not heated and so best enjoyed only briefly in the later months.
