how to find it:
The easiest way to get here is to take any bus that goes down Collier Row Lane from Romford. (Or you could get the 247 from Hainault tube, which, like the buses from Romford, stops immediately outside.) The pub is by the junction with Playfield Ave.
This is a big old suburban pub that probably hasn't changed very much in forty or more years. It's rather dark, with plenty of stained glass and some fine lamps and fittings that might possibly be Edwardian. Although all this has a certain modest charm, and the pub isn't exactly unwelcoming, it is rather gloomy. Last time we passed, most of the letters in the pub's name had fallen off, or been stolen, or otherwise gone AWOL, which just added to the vague air of neglect that this place exudes. In this age of pub closures, we hope it'll stay open, as it isn't an abysmal place: but it could, quite clearly, try harder.
