picture of Waggon
Southgate is a very odd place for pubs. In an area popular with young professionals, the hostelries on offer tend to be of the Wetherspoon variety, with a few other places having a go. None really manage to pull in a younger, though well past the alcopop phase, crowd. In recent times, this place has had more name changes than is normally good for a pub (including The Waggon and Horses, The Haywain - even Bar Rumba or some such nonsense) but is now back to its original nomenclature. It has also had a bit of an image overhaul into the bargain. There is so much magnolia paint, leather sofas, and dark stained wood in here it looks like Anne Maurice has branched out into The Pub Doctor. Having said that, it's a good-sized pub, offering a separate TV area with plasma screen (they show each and every rugby game - not surprising with the Saracens training ground nearby), a mezzanine-level pool table, and enough food to keep you on the premises should you be less than sporty. The pub is in a bit of an odd spot, between the Asda and the petrol station, so it can be quiet at times. The area needs a half-decent local for those seeking somewhere between gastro and ghastly, and this place is definitely worth a look.
