how to find it:

The nearest station is Denmark Hill. Turn right out of the station and then right into Denmark Hill Road, then walk down the hill until you come to the junction on to Church Street, which you turn right into, and you'll see the pub up on the left hand side of the road. There are a number of different buses you can get from all the surrounding local areas.

picture of The CastleThis is a bit of a strange one - a lot of the pubs in the area have gone all out become more bar than a pub, but this one doesn't seem to quite know what it's about. The wooden block furniture and wide selection of spirits and flavoured vodkas suggests bar, but at the rear there's an open fire with soft sofas around it, along with books and board games. And then you wonder how you missed the huge, rather ugly, bull's head sticking out from the wall above the fire. In fact, there are stuffed animals dotted around all over the place. And then, there are other traditional features around which all clashing with the big screen, flashing signs and modern advertising. We're not sure the mix works. However, there is generally a pleasant friendly atmosphere, and we like the pub dog. At the weekend they have a DJ playing funky disco type tunes - (never any house or trance) - which can be quite a laugh and generally makes for a fun night out, if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. Service is fine and available from your table. The food is good and you can't really complain about the drinks, with Adnams and Golden Union on offer. The wine list is also good but rather annoyingly, it comes in an enormous glass with just a splash in the bottom - and that's the only size they do. Open until 12 during the week and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, it gets pretty busy at the weekends.
