picture of Charles Lamb
The Charles Lamb is a pretty looking corner pub which boasts a good back street setting and a distinctly French influence. Having maintained the original two room layout, old advertising signs are scattered about, while flowers and candles adorn the tables. A good choice of ales on the hand pumps along with numerous bottled beers and Breton cider make it all seem rather idyllic here. Its popularity however does mean that getting a seat can be difficult at times, so it's somewhat more comfortable out of peak hours. It could be argued that the crowds make it more reminiscent of bars on the continent, but for us it was easier to decant outside than constantly get in people's way. If you're feeling peckish, there's a small menu of hearty sounding dishes, some of which are clearly French influenced. They only serve until 9.30 during the week, so after that time it can get back to feeling more like a pub again. They also serve snacks, but the lamb pasty we tried on a previous visit was a little on the diminutive side (we could've eaten two of them). Even with all the continental influences, they call themselves a "traditional pub", but either way, it's worth a look.

DO NOT GO HERE. Upon visiting the pub to ask what time they served lunch we were very rudely told they weren't open yet. We managed to find out that, as they don't take bookings, we should arrive early as the pub itself is quite small. So we arrived in good time (midday) on the day in question, to find no-one else there until half an hour later, not all of whom were eating. We ordered our lunches, one of the group requesting the lamb to be cooked through as she was pregnant. The waiter curtly responded that the lamb comes medium/rare and that therefore our friend did not then have the right to complain if it was overdone. We then were told that the mushroom tart was not in fact a tart but mushrooms on toast, and the new potatoes with the mackerel would be replaced by toast also. One of the group asked if he could have a potato side dish, to be told abruptly "no" as they don't do sides. So we finished our meals (admittedly a mistake) and then decided we would politely ask if our bill could be reduced as half the menu was replaced with toast. The staff were not only extrememly rude in their response but tried to charge us for an extra main, presumably not expecting us to actually check our bill. Like I say, DO NOT COME HERE.

I have visited this pub twice and after my last visit there will be no more further rounds bought here. Myself and friends found the staff to be unhelpful and the landlady lacked any manners or class that you would expect of a pub attempting (and falling short) to be a top notch Islington pub. I have concerns that the main menu finishes at 6pm on a Sunday and the only 'snacks' left are pies that are heated in a microwave! If you want manners and food cooked properly then walk back towards Islington tube and try the Angelic on Liverpool Road.
