Anglesey Arms, Bromley  

The area between the north end of Bromley and Sundridge Park has half a dozen decent - and contrasting - pubs within a short walk of each other, resulting in a fair amount of competition in this corner of south-east London/Kent. The Anglesey Arms is an inviting-looking Shepherd Neame place which underwent a refurbishment a few years ago. Fortunately, this was limited to a sprucing-up and the pub has retained its traditional feel. In the winter it can seem an austere pub: no music, no real background chat, a deceptively large floor area either side of the bar with dim lighting, and a transient, "only-in-here-for-one-before-the-theatre" middle-aged clientele. However, on a recent visit one warm Saturday evening in June we were pleased to find the place doing a much better trade (helped in no small part by a young chap on live mic playing all manner of rock and indie covers). You are always struggling to pull in the punters in this heavily pubbed area. However, the beers are well-casked, the service is prompt and polite, the beer garden is lovely and secluded and the interior is pretty well spotless. Thumbs up.
