picture of Prince Albert
With the Prince Albert's previous incarnation as a rough boozer now a dim and distant memory, the upmarket version that replaced it has settled nicely into its stride. The key was to avoid mucking around too much with the original features, thus smartening it up without ruining the charm. With great exterior tiling, original leaded glass, fireplaces and wood panelling all in place, it looks very nice indeed. The furniture compliments the interior and the feeling is warm. Drinks-wise, there are three well-kept ales alongside a good wine list, while sitting in the nice little front garden can be a good place to spend a warm midweek afternoon. As for the food, there's a fairly heavy focus, but it's not obtrusive; upstairs is a proper restaurant, with a mix of eating and drinking downstairs. Our experience eating here was a bit of a mixed bag, but it did pass muster. Still, with a good atmosphere and charming service, a three pint rated pub this certainly is.

Eating at the Prince Albert ... we last ate here on 16/12/2009

We tried the Charolais Beef burger served with "hand-cut chips". Giving you 5p change from a tenner is par for the course in this kind of pub but it was an excellent piece of meat. However, this reviewer was secretly pleased he didn't plump for his companion's Whole barded partridge (£12.95), which was pretty dry and bland.
