Read all about it! Forest Hill gets a gastropub! Forest Hill, previously a bit of a desert for fine pubs has an alternative to the mega Wetherspoon and the ultra-traditional Bird in Hand. The Dartmouth Arms, once a struggling Courage pub, has been taken over by the Enterprise Inns group. The magnolia paint, espresso machine and mismatched chairs have been shipped straight in. And yes, it's a definite improvement. The change of ownership has breathed new life into the place. Broken into 3 defined spaces, the pub has a very relaxed atmosphere, and despite its ubiquitous gastro-classique menu (puy lentils, lamb shank and purple sprouting broccoli in attendance) it still feels like a proper pub, and drinkers are as welcome as ever. On tap you have a choice of standard ales (including London Pride and Bombardier) as well as an extensive wine list which even includes a dessert wine should you wish to indulge. The staff are friendly and attentive without being fussy and seem as happy to serve you a half of Pride as they are to watch you polish off a rib-eye steak. The spring will see the opening of their beer garden which should be offering barbecues and spit-roasts when the rain stops.
