picture of Queen Boadicea
This one's settled in nicely under new management and seems to be doing well. We're rather taken with the ship's figurehead of the warrior Queen that looms over the entrance and the exterior tilework, previously painted over, positively glows. True, it is almost identical to it's sister pub, the Old Queen's Head on Essex Road, with a similar deficit of choice behind the bar: come on, Guinness, Kronenbourg and John Smith's are hardly a cause for excitement these days, especially at over £3 a pint. The atmosphere though, does help make up for things, pulling in a mixed crowd of local workers, local, er, locals and students from City University across the road. The menu, while not extensive, does look good and reasonably priced. It's also got a private bar at the back, called the Stag's Head Room (for obvious reasons - there seems to be a theme here, as the Queen's Head has a fantastic chandelier made out of horn and a stuffed head...) which can be hired, and there are regular music nights with DJs to look forward to. While not a great one for beer, this one is doing well with the local community - and you could do a lot worse.
