how to find it:

From Turnpike Lane tube you need to catch a bus, or have a 10 minute walk. Out of the tube, find the bus stop on Turnpike Lane itself (opposite the Burger King) and either jump on the 144 bus for a couple of stops, or walk straight until you reach the pub on your right, set back slightly off the road. From Hornsey Train Station (WAGN) turn right and walk to the main road. The pub is over the road on the left.

picture of Great Northern Railway Tavern
Tucked away in the no mans land between Muswell Hill and Turnpike Lane one can only imagine what a grand place this must have been in Victorian times. This large, high-ceilinged gin palace has retained much of its wonderful ornate glass etching and bar work, but after years of relative neglect it's looking tired. A conservatory out the back could be wonderful, but is only hinting at its potential. Still, the manager is doing a fair amount to attract clientele with a disco, karaoke, live music and Thai food. Alas, on our visit the main punters were a smattering of older men and a few loud kids playing pool. When someone gets around to trendifying this place - and they will - this reviewer prays it won't be stripped to within an inch of its life to cater for the residents in the nearby architectural horror known as 'New River Village'.

Come and give the pub a new review. It has been under new management since 03/2009 and has improved in leaps and bounds since then.
only one comment, so far on this pub - why not add your own?
