A former coaching inn, the Black Lion easily stands out in a landscape where little predates the twentieth century. Inside, a traditional low-ceilinged front bar and a larger back room offer plenty of space to test out the real ales this place specialises in. The de rigeur plasma TV screens might spoil the ambience for some, but plenty of locals wanted their sporting fix when we last stopped in. Warmer days might entice your out to the beer garden, though note as you pass the training rooms for the West Ham Boys Boxing Club. Best of order please gents. This one is certainly worth the journey if real ales are your thing but it's just pleasing to note that a pub of this vintage still has a role, especially as the equally aged Spotted Dog lies boarded up and unloved a few tube stops away.
