Well, the scaffolding has finally come down and it seems that N1 has been given another slice of Americana to enjoy. Along with the newly opened Slim Jim's on Upper Street and Big Red on Holloway Road, there are now three American-style bars a short bus ride away from each other. Still, we're not complaining, as there are enough gastropubs in the area to last a lifetime. After a slow refurb, the last vestiges of Clockwork have gone, to be replaced with a more plush and atmospheric bar. Gasp at the staggering array of bourbons or be amazed by the standard of bottled microbrewed ales from the 'good old US of Stateside'. The jukebox is as interesting as the drinks and the Monday pop quiz, run by none other than Rough Trade Records, looks like it's going to prove popular. Laid back and unpretentious, The Lexington caters perfectly for those after a late night drink without the banging tunes. Saying that, there is also a club and gig venue upstairs (usually charging a few pounds entrance), which might prove rather tempting if you fancy a dance later on.

Having gone past Clockwork many a time, I was most keen to check it out... and picked a weekend night thinking it was the opportune time. Not so. We arrived at 8.30pm Saturday to be told by the surly, attitude-filled bar tender that they were out of house scotch, budvar on tap, and a plethora of mixers/cocktail ingredients. Not good...and to top it all off, the girls loos had not a scrap of toilet paper in them! Considering this was one of the busiest nights of the week, you'd think they'd pick up their game. I won't be going back in a hurry.
