picture of Spurstowe Arms
Thankfully and to some, surprisingly, there are a lot of nice Victorian houses in parts of Hackney, missed by both developers and the Luftwaffe. Interspersed in these domiciles are some fine pubs and the Spurstowe Arms is one of them. Now it's the 21st Century, the pub has been done up in a kind of "bare brick living room" style - complete with standard and table lamps - but the overall effect is not at all displeasing and it has quite a homely atmosphere. The beer garden is very nicely done and provides a pleasant place for an evening's quaffing and conversation (and smoking, nowadays), helped in unseasonal times by outdoor heating. The beer is good - Black Sheep, Flowers and Pedigree on the hand pumps and a reasonable range on the other pumps - including the now ubiquitous Leffe and Hoegaarden. The food is OK too, maybe a little pricey, but some of the items are particularly nice. As each day passes, Hackney seems to move further upmarket and the Spurstowe only adds to the impression that, more and more, West (London) is moving East.

Eating at TheSpurstowe Arms ... we last ate here on 29/11/2007

Decent grub, with both a full menu (steak, fish etc) and a bar menu (Cornish pasties, blackpudding and fried duck egg). A little on the pricey side, but reasonable value.

I have just had the most DISGUSTING food I have ever experienced in a pub in the Spurstowe arms. I ordered the smoke Salmon and scrambled egg brunch and the salmon tasted like it had been sitting in a plastic bag and covered in oil for 2 weeks. It was rancid! The egg was not much better and a pitiful amount. My 5 friends all had the English breakfast and for 8.50 a go - one piece of scraggy bacon, a sausage, a burnt piece of toast and a tomato was certainly not worth the money! I will never, ever go back to this pub and I would not recommend it to anyone. Although the girls behind the bar were nice, the man (possibly the manager) was less than apologetic or helpful and sent us on our way when we complained about the salmon. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!
only one comment, so far on this pub - why not add your own?
