picture of Hallsville Tavern (The White House)One of the very few buildings in Canning Town to have survived the devastation of both World Wars, the Hallsville Tavern (also known as the White House) shows due deference to East End tradition and is an oasis of calm and civility behind its heavy metal doors. (A sign warning of visiting police sniffer dogs is characteristically genteel in its advice not to let man's best friend become your worst enemy'.) It is, in fact, vaguely reminiscent of a bar at a Hi-de-Hi!-style holiday camp, with green velveteen seating and a small, but interesting, selection of antique objects, plus a stage for bands or singers. There are a few (modern) stained glass windows with a nautical theme, and a painting depicting river scenes above the bar. The chosen theme of all the pub's beer mats on our visit, the promotion of vasectomies, probably gives as good an indication as any as to who the regulars here are: on our visit, they seemed to comprise a close-knit group of older men (who, one presumes, were carrying on with younger women). Free snacks on the bar on Sunday lunchtimes, of course. Quite a decent and timeless place, all in all.
