how to find it:

Rather sneakily, Highgate tube is a fair walk from Highgate Village, with a 15 minute walk in-between. Leave Highgate tube by the pedestrian exit, take a left and cross straight over the large junction onto Southwood Lane Take the second right onto Castle Yard which leads to North Road. Turn right and its on the right. Alternatively walk (or catch the bus) up Highgate Hill from Archway. At the top of the hill in the heart of the village, the pub is over the other side of the mini-roundabout a minutes walk down North Road on the right, past The Wrestlers pub. Phew.

picture of Victoria
One of the last traditional boozers in Highgate (in terms of clientele and décor), The Victoria sacrificed itself a couple of years back at the trendy altar of trying to make money and gave itself a carpet-removing makeover to entice the younger crowd. Happily, it works well here, with a rich, dark interior, lots of plants and plenty of character. The overall look is cosy and inviting. Every table also has a cup of trivial pursuit questions (albeit dating from before 1991, judging by the geography questions) - a nice touch which could certainly help break any first-date awkward silences. It a bit of a trek from both Highgate Village and Highgate tube, but it's very easy to combine it into a N6 pub crawl; you just might find yourself staying here longer than you anticipated. A couple of well-kept real ales, good food, friendly service and a Thursday pub quiz makes the Victoria another pub-centric reason to visit Highgate; if nothing else, it's certainly one of our favourite watering holes in the area.

Eating at the Victoria ... we last ate here on 07/06/2009

We tried the Sunday lunch which was very good indeed. Both the lamb and the beef (around £10) were nice cuts of meat. Both were served with some well prepared veg and an excellent Yorkshire pud. Generous portions, too. We'll be more than happy to try the weekday menu on our next visit.
