Old Justice, Wapping  

This pub would appear to be place of two halves, each of which may be suspected of having its own distinct character. However, as the larger (and surely less depressing) saloon bar wasn't open when we popped in, we can only really base our judgement of the Old Justice on the rather compact public bar. Most incongruously, especially given the limited number of seats available, there is a very comfy sofa, but otherwise the bar is austere in the extreme, really of the old school. Both the floor and the walls are of gruff old unpolished wood, and real ales, which a sign outside implies will be present, didn't seem to be in evidence when we visited, although four varieties of wine were on tap. Prints showing Scottish golf courses and signed England and Arsenal football tops provide limited visual interest. Although we hardly found it a jolly place to while away the time, the barmaid was friendly, and we got the impression that the pub had a loyal selection of, mainly older, regulars, who obviously feel this is their home from home. Whether any other passers-by, perhaps walking the Thames Path, might care to join them may well depend as to whether the saloon bar is open, and just what that is like. Were it to be open next time we're passing, the pub could possibly improve on its current one-pint rating.
