picture of Chimes
Chimes might not offer a traditional pub experience, but a visit is essential for those that believe cider and not ale is the true taste of the English countryside. This one's been serving up the apple juice since the early 1980s, and its layout and feel is rather reminiscent of wine bars of the period. The ciders and perries here include choices from the orchards of Herefordshire (Weston's) and Kent (Biddenden), and the food on offer is of the hearty English variety that has us reaching for that ye olde descriptive term 'fayre' (how often do you see Fidget Pie on a menu in London?). The ciders are pretty potent though and are served in half-pints or two-pint jugs (if you're sharing). We'll leave it to you if you want to ask for ice in the cider, though. It all adds up to one of the most singular English drinking experiences in town, but the feel of the place can be rather subdued (possibly as there's more room for diners than drinkers). Now then - how about a bar devoted to mead?
