picture of George
This pub exhibits most of the features generally associated with those of the J.D. Wetherspoon chain: therefore, several real ales on the hand pumps are generally available, as is cheap, reasonable quality food, with frequent special offers. Thankfully, the rather impressive building has such charm and sense of history that the chain branding and uninspired corporate furnishings do not succeed in sucking all the life out of the place. Many charming Edwardian features, such as etched windows and interior stained-glass fixtures are complemented by contemporary touches, including a large, ceiling-mounted, papier maché dragon. A prominently positioned 'throne' adorned with claws and horns and various forms of illustration depicting various George's in English history or myth all add character to the pub. The upstairs bar (which is principally intended for diners) boasts a fine view over George Green opposite. The pub is generally busy, and, when we visited, appeared slightly understaffed. We would certainly recommend a visit to admire the architecture and to enjoy the beer.

Main comment is all correct. However the wide selection of beer means some of it can often be 'on the turn' - to be generous. And 'slightly understaffed' is a massive understatement - even when the pub is nearly empty it can take ages to get served.
only one comment, so far on this pub - why not add your own?
