how to find it:

Bus 146 from Bromley, or Minibus R8 from Orpington, will get you here in 20-30 minutes or so. Both of these routes generally run once an hour, and not at all on Sundays, and the last R8 is at about 9pm. (Other buses are available on Sundays, a 20-minute-or-so walk so away.)

One of two pubs in the village of Downe, which hopes to attain UNESCO World Heritage Status, the Queen's Head is a quietly fabulous village pub. It dates back to the Elizabethan period, and one of the two bars is named in honour of Charles Darwin, who, it is claimed, frequented the pub when he lived and worked nearby, at Down House. This bar boasts lots of nooks and crannies, some cosy and old-fashioned leather sofas and newspapers to read. There's a log fire and a pub dog, too. The larger Suhaili bar (named after a globe-traversing boat sailed by a resident of the village) screens football and rugby matches. The pub offers good beers on hand pumps and a food menu. A friendly place to relax, we can recommend a visit.
