Pub sign of the pig-men of Animal Farm notwithstanding, this pub is an unworthy tribute to Hayes's pre-eminent former resident. Given his views on what makes a good pub it's rather an insult, or possibly revenge for Orwell's dislike of this neighbourhood. Here five hand pumps promise real ales 'coming soon' (one is available), and a 'beer garden' is 100% concrete. At least the bar staff were cheery, indeed extremely tolerant of the shouting, cursing, aggressive clientele. And therein lies the problem: it was impossible to find any place in this little pub free of the air pollution of such discourse, or untainted by very loud, dire, music. The consistently bad choices from the million-track MP3 track jukebox exemplify the bad taste that sadly reigns here.
