picture of Jolly JudgeJust off the Royal Mile where tourists vie the keenest to buy shite the victim will neither want, need nor appreciate (just buy a decent bottle of malt from the nearest off-license and be done with it) the Jolly Judge offers respite and solace to those avoiding this madness. Just how much respite you get depends on your timing, as it can be pretty mental inside too, especially weekends and Festival time. However, this ancient pub feels just how an old town pub should - cosy and dark. It's not a theme pub - it serves a couple of real ales plus Belhaven beers on tap and the usual S&N beers. It also does pub grub, sports a thick carpet, even thicker walls and can get terribly warm. And if choosing a decent malt poses fresh problems, there are 20 or so to try.
