picture of Punch TavernUnfortunately, the Punch Tavern is only half the pub it used to be. For some reason, hard to work out at the moment, the pub was divided in two a few years ago. Now only half of the magnificent Victorian interior is accessible by the punters. A real shame, it was one of the great Fleet Street pubs when Fleet Street was the centre of journalistic excellence (or otherwise) in the UK. It still does a pretty decent pint of Guinness but the other beer is not very remarkable. Always busy, a Friday evening visit saw this one's resources stretched to the limit. A recent innovation on the food front has established what's been described as "a self service gastropub", which translated means "buffet". Pop in on a quieter night to admire what's left of the interior and ponder what's now on the other side of the wall on your right as you enter.
