A few years ago when the Old Nick reopened after a period of closure, bigger and better than before, we breathed a collective sigh of relief. The place obviously had money lavished on it and happily the décor and ethos were of a good traditional British pub. Sure enough, it gained an award from our good selves. Sadly, since this inaugural high point, the shine has rather dulled for us. For a start, its overly bright inside and save for the cosy back section, it feels more like a vertical drinking establishment. It does serve a decent selection of Hall & Woodhouse's Badger Ales, but service can be very slow, sometimes simply due to the weight of custom, other times due to being understaffed. If you hadn't guessed, it gets very, very busy after work, but it can be practically deserted at the weekend; a previous Saturday evening visit offered a typically lacklustre atmosphere, with disinterested staff who closed up early when they decided they wanted to go home.
