picture of Crown Liquor SaloonA listed building, owned by the National Trust, the Crown is an absolute gem. It is covered, inside and out, with Victorian tiling, the windows are exquisitely etched, and the lighting - from gas lamps - is subdued, adding to the atmosphere of stable timelessness. Most of the seating is in snugs, which can be reserved, e.g. for lunch. The one problem with the Crown stems from its popularity: it is included in most tourist itineries of the city, while its location at a transport hub brings in more custom. None the less, the popularity of the pub adds to the conviviality and as serves as a testimony to its excellence, and if you can't get into a snug, you can always prop up the (granite) bar. There are some lively characters among the regulars, too. There is a separate dining area, but some bar food is served in the main bar, and there is usually at least one real ale on hand pumps (Belfast Ale, more likely than not). This is not just a gorgeous building, it's a fine example of "pubbishness" at its best, and a great ambassador for the city. You can even wipe your feet on a tiled image of the Crown as you walk in!
