Melange was a quirky little place, about a mile north of the popular Hoxton nub, but for whatever reason shut up shop late in 2008. Happily we recently discovered that the pub has reopened. Apparently the decor is modelled on a Victorian playroom, although we're not sure how many playrooms are filled with Chesterfields. Still, it is a cosy little place subtly lit and pretty laid back. There are no ales on tap (one lone pump was unused), but there was a decent choice of lager and wine in compensation. Food is also being offered with a small and inexpensive menu, but it doesn't seem like a place to come just to dine. On weekends, with its late licence you can find live music and DJs in situ, while there is also promise of a basement gallery - so good, so Hoxton. Indeed, according to their website the Hobby Horse is "open to the creatives of East London", which makes us wonder whether us uncreative North Londoners aren't allowed in?
