Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham  

Allegedly England's oldest pub (as the exterior pretty much screams at you) - although hard evidence for a 1189 foundation is rather hard to track down. In truth, it doesn't really matter whether crusaders assembled here before heading off to Jerusalem to do their bit for inter-communal relations (Medieval style) because it is certainly bloody old. The setting at the foot of the castle rock makes it one of the more evocative spots in Nottingham to drink, especially on a summer evening and, with numerous quirky rooms, including a lounge dug out of the rock itself, pictures of old music hall stars and a very traditional décor it can sometimes appear to be living on the history in the fashion an afterwork drinker can live on the ill-advised just-one-more and fried snack foods. Indeed there was a time when it seemed as much museum piece as pub, but now it is making more of an effort to bring in the punters with events ranging from the odd gig to more ye olde-ness in the form of storytelling evenings and such on-offs as the intriguing-sounding 'ringing the bull'. Best of all - in our view - is the fact that although its run by the local Hardy & Hanson heritage crew, it now sells a choice of (generally superior) guest ales. So: worth girding on your armour and laying siege to the bar until King Richard gets his round in.
