picture of Lord NelsonIf you're not into big screen football its sometimes a frustrating task to have a relaxing weekend pint in Barnet. However, if you're prepared to venture a little off the beaten path, the Lord Nelson is not only usually football free but also the best pub in Barnet by a long way. Tucked away behind an anonymous looking main road, it was quite a surprise to find such a lovely pub, its interior appropriately festooned with anything vaguely nautical or watery - barometers, paintings of ships - even bath taps. Two beautiful model boats sit in front of a large stained glass window alongside fresh flowers, whilst a scattering of Tiffany lamps create a warm, glowing atmosphere. There's no sideway glances when you come here (well, apart from the pub's menagerie of dogs and cats) - just relaxed regulars and pleasant service. Along with three well-kept ales, you'll find some really great food, freshly prepared by the landlady herself. Repeated visits cemented this pub's position as Barnet's first (and only) award-winning five pinter.

Eating at the Lord Nelson ... we last ate here on 03/11/2007

Small traditional menu, such as Lamb shank for £5 - yes a fiver - and various desserts, including Jam roly poly, for £2.50. Everything excellent. Served every day until 9pm (ish).
