If you're not into big screen football it's sometimes a frustrating task to have a relaxing weekend pint in Barnet. However, if you're prepared to venture a little off the beaten path, the Lord Nelson is not only usually football free but a visual treat. Tucked away behind an anonymous looking main road, it was quite a surprise to find such a lovely pub, its interior appropriately festooned with anything vaguely nautical or watery - barometers, paintings of ships - even bath taps on the mantelpiece. Two beautiful model boats sit in front of a large stained glass window alongside fresh flowers, whilst a scattering of Tiffany lamps create a warm, glowing atmosphere. There's no sideways glances when you come here (well, apart from the pub's menagerie of dogs and cats) - just relaxed regulars and pleasant service. Along with three or four well-kept ales, you'll find some great food, freshly prepared by the landlady herself. Certainly the best pub in Barnet by a long way, we just wish the welcome from the landlord was a little more friendly, which is the only thing that lets the Lord Nelson down.

Eating at TheLord Nelson ... we last ate here on 26/10/2008

Small traditional menu, such as Lamb shank for a little over £5 and traditional desserts, including Jam roly poly, for between £2.75 and £3. Everything pretty good. Served every day until 9pm (ish).

This pub is great. They do the most fantastic Sunday roast for only a fiver. It's got a friendly atmosphere and the TV is never 'in your face'. My partner and I refer to it as 'our bolthole' and haven't shared it with our friends. WE only found it thanks to fancyapint.com - we'd actually spent the previous 3 or 4 years driving behind it on the main road without knowing it was even there!

Used to live just down the road from the Nelson and I've missed it ever since we left. The food was fantastic, the beers were tasty, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. I even got a birthday card from the staff and pets! Sadly I moved to Wood Green and there's not a pub worth even a 2-pint score within a mile.
