Walk down Broad Street from High Town and turn into East Street, then take the first right. Alternatively, take the passage from High Town next to Marks and Sparks and cross East Street into Church Street.
This pub, on a pedestrianised, cobbled street between the Cathedral and the central area of the city (known as High Town), appears to be back to its best after suffering a slight downturn a few years ago. Opened out into one room, it is not the biggest hostelry, but the decked back garden increases capacity during the summer months and obviously provides a home for smokers. It seems to attract quite a varied clientele, locals and tourists alike, and can soon become busy enough to make finding a seat a challenge. Food is available at lunchtimes, while a couple of Theakston's brews were among the ale options on our last visit.
