Brannigans, Norwich  

If for some unfortunate reason you are dragged down to the glitzy compost heap of Norwich's riverside area then Brannigans is probably your best option. It does suffer, as one might expect, from similar defects to its nearby cousins: loud, overpriced and lager dominated, Brannigans captures the city's clubbing fraternity with a standard swanky bar and big glossy interior. In short, character is thrown overboard in favour of a franchised brand that is big, garish and perfectly summoned up by the tacky "Cavorting" sign that hangs over the entrance. However, Brannigans does have a few saving graces. While piped popped pap is banged out usually, occasional bands and tribute acts grace its main platform, while during most of the day the music is turned off, either to allow sports fans to watch one of its big screens or actually to let people talk to each other (a concept alien to its neighbours). Equally it runs the strictest door policy in the area, meaning a low muppet and aggro count. And whilst it maybe superficial, Brannigans is at least comfortable and clean, with friendly, pleasant staff. These plusses raise this standard bar to a solid two pint rating and it's easily the best pub in the area. But then considering the competition, that isn't saying much.
