picture of Northumberland Arms
Recently refurbished, the Northumberland Arms appears now to be a strange pub bar hybrid. The bar area itself is all very modern and displays a fine line in trendy wooden surfaces and wine racks. However, to the right of the bar it far more pub-like, albeit with a few light shades which look like they may have been hastily procured from one of the local furniture shops on Tottenham Court Road in a desperate attempt to make the place look a bit more consistent. The "goldfish bowl" effect the original pub had is still very much in existence, although the passing observer will now be more likely see young twenty-somethings with haircuts drinking spirits than the beery local workers of yore. On our visit the service was little short of appalling while one barman had obviously decided it was his turn for a fag break, the other one couldn't be dissuaded from glass washing duties. In fact it wasn't that clear if you were supposed to order at the bar or wait for someone to come to your table. If this place makes its mind up about what it wants to be and as long as our experience of the service was atypical, it could well have something to offer.
