how to find it:

From Maida Vale tube, turn right up Randolf Avenue and left onto Carlton Vale. You'll soon see the pub on the left. If you know the area there's also a shortcut through the unimaginatively named but very pretty Paddington Recreation Ground.

At the point where the elegant sweep of Georgian townhouses and Edwardian apartments of Maida Vale are replaced by 1960s low rise council housing of Kilburn Park, the Carlton Tavern looks rather out of place. There's a fantastic tiled exterior which is, at least in part, complimented by the interior; it maybe tatty but its also pretty unmolested - check out the fireplace and plasterwork on the ceiling to see what we mean. Ours was an out of hours visit so only a handful of older locals were in situ all watching the racing, but the landlady gets tops marks for making us feel genuinely welcome - she knew everyone's name and we suspect with a few more visits under our belt she would know ours too.
