picture of Aldgate Exchange
The Aldgate Exchange is wired for sport, big time. There's a TV in every corner, one or two in the middle of walls, screens behind the bar and a large projector screen at one end. Almost everywhere you look, there's some tele-visual action - showing some sporting event or other (usually footy). You'd be forgiven for thinking that this place must be like a branch of Currys with a bar down one side - it's not. It's actually quite a decent pub too. There are real ales on four hand pumps, naturally, there are the prerequisite footy lagers (Guinness for the rugby), lots of bottled beers, ciders, spirits, shots and the like. The make-up of the clientele also challenges your prejudices, it's not just gangs of strident, tubby guys sporting their team colours, it's a real mix, reflecting the diversity of the area - work, gender and race and it all adds to the buzzy atmosphere when there's a big event on. Truth be told, the Aldgate Exchange has been like this for years, it's not much changed, apart getting spruced up every so often, to keep it clean and tidy and it's easy to see why. The Aldgate Exchange has hit on a successful formula, so much so we expect to become as much an institution in the shellfish stall outside.
