The Albany, Cardiff  

Tucked away in a mass of studentville terraces, lies one of Cardiff's best pubs which, unusually for an older city boozer, boasts a decent pub garden. Whilst some Brain's pubs lobotomise their beer, The Albany does a superb job and gives what the brewer intended in surroundings that suit. Think what a traditional pub should have and it's here, all present and correct, including a skittle alley. You might not want to use it, but it's good to know its here. Friendly staff work in what can be a very busy pub: madly popular on Six Nations and other big rugby occasions, when getting a seat requires turning up very early. This is classic example of a late Victorian South Wales pub, which retaining the feel of and connection to its origins both in décor and in personality. Also deserving a mention is the food, which doesn't let the side down as it is also superior to many a Cardiff pub. In summary a real battle cruiser for real people, busy or quiet.
